Vista Caller-ID 1.0.7 Beta Available Now!
This is primarily a bug fix release, but we found time to introduce a few nice new features –most notably support for Caller ID History printing and the Vista Caller-ID Windows Home Server and Windows Media Center Add-in.

I’ve just installed caller ID with a smartlink modem on a windows vista business PC, the pop up does not appear nor does a call get logged when i phone the line. However in diagnostics i do see this which is added each time i make a call so it obviously is picking something up. Smart Link 56K Voice Modem Call State Change: Disconnected [21/02/2008 21:58:00]
Smart Link 56K Voice Modem Call State Change: Offering [21/02/2008 22:02:20]
Thanks very much as this looks like a great piece of software if I can get it to work!

I have the same issue. I have set my area code under the phone/modem options and the diagnostic log for the modem indicates that it detects the call. The modem is a Conexant D850 which does support Caller ID. I’m baffled and bummed

I added additional information to test (or verify) the modem’s caller id functionality. It is possible ones modem AT command need tweaking or that the driver inf file itself may needed editing.
HyperTerminal Caller ID Support Test
February 25th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Trying Vista Caller-ID with a Motorola Voice Surfr 56k external.
I used the hyper terminal test using my cell phone calling home and caller id shows up in the hyper terminal window with my name and phone number, but when I turn Vista Caller-ID on nothing pops up.
March 2nd, 2008 at 8:02 am
Getting a unhandled exception error when clicking the system system info button. Also where do I send the diagnostic text file it creates and the unhandled exception error text I copied?
Thanks…

I love the GUI unfortunately does not work.
I am using vista ultimate with Eumex 704 PC and Speedport W701v. Eumex is always lunching a caller id popup on incoming calls. Only the number no any features such as you guys offer.
So I guess my modem does support caller-id and I do not have to download the terminal as you suggested earlier here?
I hope you can support. Thanks guys a lot!
March 11th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Sounds like your hardware supports Caller ID but Emuex is locking the modem not allowing anything/anyone else to bind?
Please ensure the Eumex software is not running when testing!
Let us know, good luck.

Love the new program. Any plans on being able to add Live Mail contacts instead of Outlook?
March 14th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Accidentally stumble into this while searching “outlook caller id”. This program looks wonderful for it does. I don’t have anything hooked up to my phone line, but I’m wondering if it would work with a Bluetooth modem, i.e. a cell phone… I’ll try that once I get a BT dongle.
March 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
This application is great! Well Done!
One issue with the WHS Add-In. It duplicates every call in the log. Not sure if it’s something I did or what. The install went perfect and it worked the first time on my Vista 32bit PC and the WHS PC just showing each call twice in the log on WHS.
Where did the MCE integration go?
Functionality suggestion: I have been using YAC and the one thing I liked about it was the ability to install the server version on one PC with a modem and then install a client version on all the other PCs in the house. Then when a call comes in the server version sends out a signal over the network that the clients pick up. That way every PC can popup the notification window without having to have a modem in all of them. Just a thought.
March 20th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I would love YAC support too so Vista CallerID can act like a YAC client. I run YAC on my server and I want callerid info on my pc and mediacenter too. Will donation help?

Thank you for a superb peice of software.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
For me, YAC is not only something I would like but something that’s actually required since we use another called ID system in Sweden which hardly any modems is capable of supporting. I believe the system is called DTMF. Luckily I have a device, called dAnswer Companion, hooked up to a serial port which takes the DTMF signal and outputs to the YAC protocol. It would of course be even nicer if Vista Called ID would support the device directly but I think that’s very unlikelly since it’s just not common enough

Does v1.0.7 MediaCenter add-in work with extenders? I’d try myself, but the download link doesn’t seem to be working at the moment…
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Cool. By the screenshot, it appears that it should work on extenders. I’ll give it a try tonight.
April 4th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Ok, I have the main app working (looks great!), but the Media Center add-in just doesn’t work. In fact, when I enable the media center add in in the main app (by default it has my machine name filled in), the desktop notifications no longer work either. When I turn off the add-in, the desktop notifications work again. Either way, nothing shows up in media center.
When I start media center I do get the notification that vista caller-id loaded.
Anything I can try?

Thank u if it works So much ???
And it looks so cool and useful too__ ihobe it works
April 8th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Hi! Nice software but only if i could make it work….
I successfully followed your hyper terminal caller id support test, till step 8 (where it typed AT+VCID=1 and got an OK), but after that, I’m completely stuck as i only get a RING RING on the terminal and no caller id.
My modem is “CXT HDAUDIO SoftV92 data fax modem with smartCP” and my phone company does provide me caller id support. I run a win Vista home premuim edition.
Plzz help!!!!
April 8th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
The good news is that the hyperterminal test confirms your hardware/system will provide you with Caller ID – the bad news is that many modem drivers have an error in them preventing them from displaying the caller id information in TAPI mode.
Luckily one is able to fix this by padding the modem driver inf file accordingly. (This is an area we need to improve and provide another how-to-guide). Meanwhile please take a look at Agere System Modem Fix - shows how one would fix the modem inf for that particular modem as an example.
April 8th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Hi, this software looks great…but it wont work for me! I am using the desktop software with the media center plugin installed. However, when I get a call there is NO notification from either source!
However, when I check the history, all the calls show up fine. Why don’t desktop and/or media center notifications work?
April 8th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Sorry for the double post but I stupidly forgot to mention im using windows vista ultimate x64 and an Agere modem with the inf fix.
April 8th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
You can delete my previous 2 comments or combine them but I did what ‘groove’ did and deleted the windows media add on. And the program works! Theres definitely something wrong with the windows media add-on plugin.
Also if possible, could you please add an option to remove the “Vista caller id loaded” icon that pops up? I have my media center on a relatively small pc (32 inch) and it runs at 720p so the logo is rather big.
But this program is awesome and thanks for making it free!

Hi!
Thanks for the prompt help & yes it would be great if u could come out with a modem guide :).
I went through the site you suggested & then did a bit of my stuff.
Below is what i found in my modem’s inf file.
It looks similar to the code i found on the wiki.

I just took a look at my call history and there are no entries after April 6th. Of course I have had phone calls since then and I just verified that the pop-up is still working. Is there a log you can point me to to help debug this problem?
April 13th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
I’m experiencing the same issues as Omar & groove.
The main application works just fine, but the Media Center add-in just doesn’t work. When I enable the Media Center add-in in the main application (by default, it has my machine name filled in), the desktop notifications no longer work. When I turn off the add-in, the desktop notifications work again. Either way, nothing shows up in media center.

For those of you experiencing the Media Center Add-in not working bug in the current release you may try the latest development builds available here:
http://cid-4eee1a1ee6bd6cb3.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Vista%20Caller-ID/DEV%20Builds
April 18th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
I am having the same problem as Omar, Groove, and Paul Bailey. Nothing works with the MCE add-in installed. I would like to try the latest dev build, but the link to the file doesn’t work.
April 18th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
And browsing around your skydrive doesn’t reveal any other files either… the DEV Builds folder is empty…
April 19th, 2008 at 6:55 am
I tried downloading the latest development builds but get the following error when clicking on the link.
That file seems to be missing Someone may have deleted or moved the file or folder you asked for, or you may not have permission to view it. If you have questions about this file or folder, contact the person who created it.
April 20th, 2008 at 12:44 am
I saw a question on another forum (I think it was Chris Laniers media center blog) and the guy asked if there was a callerid software that would show callerid from Bluetooth devices, like your cellphone.
So how about that?
I thought that perhaps you could add the possibility to make like an “input plugin” and then you just add modules for whatever you want to support. Bluetooth or YAC or why not even a plugin that display when you got an email in addition to TAPI devices? Not that I want to be shown my emails but still, I am only thinking about ideas.
A lot of people today have a cellphone as their primary phone so this bluetooth addition would most likely be welcomed.

I have Vista x64 and the Agere PCI Softmodem. I’ve done the Hyperterminal text and the calling ID is coming up correctly, but I get no response at all from Caller-ID when there is an incoming call.
I’ve seen the link to the Agere modem fix, but I’ve searched my system for a ‘modem.ini’ (or is it .inf?) to edit with no luck.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
thanks

One of the simplest methods to determine the modem INF file name is via the modem-log (control panel -> phone and modem options) look for something like “Modem INF Path: xxxxxxxxx.inf”
May 15th, 2008 at 7:30 am
May I suggesst to add a call time field in the report history to tell you how long you were on the call for? We are using this to track how long we were on support calls in the office, and it iwould be awesomne to have such quick access to this informaiton for filling out tickets…
May 16th, 2008 at 8:36 am
I installed it on an XP system to test with. It works as far as popping up with the information and voice alerts. But it is not populating the Microsoft Home Server share folder.

Is it possible to get Vista Caller ID to work with “Tapi IP” VOIP systems? I have a Cisco VOIP system with caller ID, but this system does not show up as an option in the “Phone and Modem” options. If it is not possible, are there any plans to include this in future releases? Thanks.

Hey, This is a great program and essential plugin for my Media Center. Unfortunately I can’t get it working right. I’ve confirmed my modem can display callerid information (Name and Number) through hyperterminal.(where i typed AT+VCID=1 and got an OK). It also display the information correctly in the call log, however, I receive no notification in vista, or my media center(different PCs). I also get no notification telling me the program has loaded successfully in media center nor is it viewable in the program library. In the media center configuration page, the default PC name is the one i’m using, and I can’t seem to change it to my media center pc’s name. It will just automatically change back as soon as I exit.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

@Steve
What kind of Modem and PC are you using. I had major issues getting this working on my Dell xps420 w/ Conexant Modem. I finally found someone who had customized the INF modem driver to get the caller id to work correctly.
You may need to install a different modem driver. Check out the forums on http://www.thegreenbutton.com and search XPS 420 modem.

I can’t get this working either. My modem (a USR 56K v92 faxmodem) shows up just fine in the list, status OK. But calls never get logged. I know my caller ID is working properly on my line, callers appear on my other phones.
Running Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Windows Home Server.
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
@Soul, did you set your area code under phone and modem options? Please email me your modem log and or the diagnostics file under documents\callerid\diagnostics.txt to akent AT kentdome.com - perhaps i can help.
June 8th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
I had some problems getting this to work. I had to make some changes to the INF file for my modem, which was mentioned above. The calls are logged in my history, and all of the information is there, but the desktop or MCE popups never pop up with the caller information. Any ideas?

Admin, is possibile integrate into VistaCallerId the command AT+VCID=1 than the program start? ^_^
June 15th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Yes but you would need to put this info into your modem’s INF file, something like HKR, EnableCallerID,1,,”at+vcid=1”
Most likely you would further need to pad your INF file, look at:
http://talkingcallerid.com/modemdriver.htm
June 20th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Can the desktop application be installed on the same system as the MCE add in? The desktop application works perfectly but I get no notification on MCE. Thanks for taking the time to review this for me.
June 25th, 2008 at 8:14 am
I am using an Agere V.92 modem (in an HP Pavilion PC, running XP SP3), have modified the .inf file, added AT+VCID=1 to additional commands in modem control panel, and rebooted. HyperTerminal says OK on AT+VCID=1, but incoming calls only display RING RING, no CID.
Anything else I can try?
I am using Vista Caller ID 1.0.7 Beta and notice a number of bugs: call-announcement settings are not saved, there is no “Go Back” button on several of the settings pages, the media-center computer name is not saved, “System Information” throws an exception. Should I perhaps use 1.0.6 instead?
Here’s my diagnostics file:

I would first ensure your modem is capable of interpreting Caller ID information; if AT+VCID=1 only yields RING RING try AT#CLS=8#CID=1
AT#CID=2
AT%CCID=1
AT%CCID=2
AT+VCID=1
AT#CC1
AT*ID1
Some modems use chipsets that support caller id, but do not include the extra bits of electronics to detect it. In such cases the modems usually respond “OK” to commands to enable caller id detection, but then report no caller information. Meanwhile I have emailed you a Caller ID fix utility.
In addition the issues you are describing are primarily related to Windows XP which we only support in legacy mode. This is an area we will improve upon with the next version but Vista Caller-ID really uses newer technologies only found in the Windows Vista product family.
June 28th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
We created a Caller ID Repair Utility to try and help fix some of these incorrectly configured modems.

Very nice program! Extremely useful since I am most often in front of my screen and my phone’s display is busted.
However, on the latest 1.0.7 beta, I also am not able to get any notification (either desktop or MCE) whenever the MCE add-in is activated. Calls continue to be logged without any notification. I am running Vista HP 64 bit, and I wonder is the 64-bit is causing the bug. It would be very useful to have the MCE notification work. Thanks for your good work.
June 30th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Still playing with this and want to make sure I understand the intended functionality here. Is the MCE add-in necessary when Vista Caller-ID is used on a stand-alone PC running MCE? Or should it be activated, and the additional program installed, only when used on a network with Extenders? In any case, I’m unable to get any MCE functionality on my single desktop/HTPC under any permutation of settings or installation of the add-in. When the MCE feature is activated, all notifications, even speech, stop. When MCE is not selected, the rest of the program works beautifully! And at least the voice still announces calls when MCE is full-screen. Would love to see this fully functional someday - unless I am doing anything incorrectly now. Thanks.

@Mark, thank you for your feedback.
There are some known issues which have been fixed in the new 1.0.8 version TBR - Meanwhile I have send you an email, let me know if that helped. Thank you.
July 3rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Greetings. I seem to be experiencing the same issues as Mark. I’m running Vista 32 on an HP DEC/HTPC. I’m also running an Xbox 360 as a MCE. I have the 1.0.7 release installed along with the MCE addin. If I activate the MCE check box, all notifications stop, inside of VMC and otherwise. If I uncheck the MCE addin, the notifications resume. Is the MCE addin only needed for media center extenders, or is it required to view the notifictions within the media center interface on the local machine?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Hi, just loaded your program last night and am quite impressed so far.
One question: I use two 360s as extenders. Every time we power them up, we see a “Vista Caller Id Ready” box appear at the top-right of the screen. Is there any way to disable that notification, yet still keep the caller id boxes?
Great software, thanks a bunch.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Thanks for the application. It is working inside MCE and the 360 extender. I had to install the April 15 fix version to get it working.
For the MCE add-in, is it possible to not display the dialog that the add-in has been loaded when starting MCE? Instead, it might be helpful to only display a message if the add-in hasn’t been loaded as I have seen other add-ins do.
July 20th, 2008 at 7:07 am
How do I re-enable the Vista Caller-ID MCE v1.1.0b plug-in.
I tried it with Vista Caller-ID v1.0.7 and didn’t get it to work so I uninstalled it. Media Center gave me the option of disabling the MCE plug-in, so I said yes.
Now I’ve installed Vista Caller-ID v1.0.7 April 15 fix along with the MCE plug-in but I no longer get the display dialog showing the MCE plug-in has loaded.
July 20th, 2008 at 7:13 am
I forgot to mention that I already have placed a checkmark in the box for the Microsoft Windows Media Center Add-in in Vista Caller-ID but still don’t see the display dialog in MCE at all.
