Frequently Asked Questions about Vista Caller-ID
Q: Help! The installer fails with error code 2869
A: Please ensure you are running the installer with elevated privileges in Windows Vista and that the installer package has been extracted fully from its containing zip file.
Q: Why doesn’t Vista Caller-ID show the name and number of the person calling?
A: There are several reasons why Vista Caller-ID may not report any name and number information for an incoming phone call.
- If your modem is installed as “Standard” or Generic modem, you are likely using the wrong driver. Try reinstalling with the correct driver. Check your modem (or computer) manufacturer’s web site for the latest driver.
- Your phone line may not have caller id service enabled. You can test this by hooking a hardware caller id device to your phone line or verify using a caller id enabled telephone.
- Another device on the phone line may be interfering. If the phone line doesn’t run directly from the wall jack to your modem, try plugging the modem directly into the wall jack. If this fixes the problem, you can reconnect the other devices one at a time to determine which one is responsible.
Some fax machines and other specialized phone devices pick up the phone before other devices can receive the caller information. You can also try disconnecting devices connected to different wall jacks, if they use the same phone line, even if they’re in different rooms. Fax machines and phone line sharing devices are most likely to cause problems. (Note that such devices frequently cannot be made to work with other devices.) Surge protectors with telephone line protection can also cause problems. If bypassing the surge protector fixes the problem, contact your surge protector manufacturer or try a different model.
DSL filters may also cause problems. - Your phone company may be sending the caller information incorrectly, or your modem may be reporting it incorrectly.
- Your modem area code information has not been configured under control panel -> hardware and sound -> phone and modem options. Alternatively, you may shortcut using telephon.cpl located in the system root system32 directory.
- Use the HyperTerminal to test Caller ID support.
Q: Will Vista Caller-ID work with my DSL modem?
A: No. DSL modems do not provide caller information since DSL lines don’t accept incoming calls.
Q: Does Vista Caller-ID work with call waiting id?
A: No. At this time we are unaware of any modems that pass call waiting information through the TAPI interface. The modems that support call waiting id that are we aware of support it in a limited fashion — you must be connected to an ISP that supports modem-on-hold for it to work. If your ISP does not support modem-on-hold or your modem is not the device using the phone line, then call waiting id does not work.
Q: Will Vista Caller-ID work with my voice or data modem?
A: The simplest way to determine whether Vista Caller-ID works with a modem is to try it. You can download and use Vista Caller-ID right away its Free. If Vista Caller-ID does not immediately start reporting the caller’s phone number, please look here.
Q: Does Vista Caller-ID work with multiple phone lines?
A: Yes. Vista Caller-ID supports multiple phone lines using multiple modems, multi-line TAPI devices (such as a PBX with TAPI support). When using modems, you can use multiple modems in one computer, or one modem in multiple computers, or some combination of the two.
Q: Does Vista Caller-ID work on Windows XP?
A: Yes. Vista Caller-ID is compatible with Windows XP SP2; however, Vista Caller-ID has been developed to make use of newer technologies presently only available in the Windows Vista family of products.
Q: How to subscribe to Caller ID in your home state?
A: Caller ID is an optional service offered by telephone companies for an additional monthly fee. (Fees vary by Phone Company.) To learn more about Caller ID or the availability of this service in your area, contact your telephone company or your state public utility commission.
